Tomonoura’s old streets and highlights-the Goshikiiwa of Sensuijima

Introduction of Tomonoura

Tomonoura (back of Tomo), the Seto Inland Sea National Park, has been designated to the scenic spot “Tomo Garden" of the country, you can also plug the harbor and its surroundings which is in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture Tomo district.
Tomo no Machi, a city with beautiful streets, has been selected as one of the “100 Best Cityscapes”, “100 Beautiful Japanese Historical Climates”, and “Japan’s Twenty-Five Katsu”, and is a popular tourist spot in Hiroshima that attracts many tourists .

Since ancient times, the Seto Inland Sea has caused currents due to the tides. You.
Conversely, at low tide, currents flow from Tomonoura to the east and west.

I used this current (tide flow) when sailing in the Seto Inland Sea by ship in the past, when there was no power such as an engine.
As a result, Tomonoura became a key point for maritime traffic, a port that waits for the tide, and it became a place where boats always drop in, serving both as supplies and prospering.
Manyoshu includes 8 songs singing Tomonoura.
This Tomonoura is also said to be a model in Hayao Miyazaki’s animated movie “Ponyo on the Cliff" (released in 2008).
Ura is a word that means a cove.

Only Tomo Port is the only nostalgic port in Japan, where all of the port facilities until the Edo period, the “nightlight”, “gangi”, “wharf”, “firehouse”, and “funnel” all remain in Japan. It is a port town with a long history.

The contrast between the old town and the sea gives a very nice atmosphere.

It also became a shooting location for the meteor wagon and the casebook of the detective Mitarai and the sea of the star cage.

The Tomo, Yoshiaki Ashikaga is provided Tomo shogunate Tomo-castle and trace, from the north and south morning era Daikashimajo but there is a trace, Castle Ruins we have more information to introduce in a separate page.

Nightlights are lights that are turned on all night so that ships that cannot call by daylight can arrive at dark nights, but are like lighthouses for now.

Ota Family Residence

At the end of the Tokugawa period, in 1863, seven public lords, such as the Imperial Japanese rebel group Mimi Sanjo , fled to Choshu after being ousted from Kyoto by the Kobu coalition.
At the time of the fall of the Seven Lords , we stopped at Tomo Port, served as a famous sake brewery of the Fukuyama domain, and stayed at the Nakamura family, a brewery of Homei Sake, which was a specialty product of Tomonoura.

It became the home of the Nakamura family who served as a famous sake liquor store of the Fukuyama Domain, and has been designated as a national important cultural property.

In 1864 (the first year of the original rule), when he climbs from Choshu to Kyoto, he stops at Tomo Port by boat and stays at Nakamura Landlord and Asotei.

This Nakamuraya is the current Ota family, and the building is open to the public.
This is an explanation type of visit.

Relationship with Ryoma Sakamoto

Ryoma Sakamoto has visited Tomonoura many times.
In particular, Sakamoto Ryoma " Kaientai have formed a", 1867 at the time of starting the marine transportation business, “of had borrowed Iyo-Ozu clan owned Iroha circle " is Nagasaki was heading to Osaka from the Port, Around Kasaoka Islands in Bichu, a collision has occurred with the Kishu clan warship Meikomaru.
At this time, Ryoma Sakamoto and other sea supporters on board Iroha Maru and the crew of Meiko Maru landed on Tomonoura.
Compensation negotiations between Ryoma Sakamoto and the Kishu clan have been held at Tomo no Shiorou for four days.

After all, negotiations in Tomo is not settled, the subsequent negotiations at Nagasaki magistrates has also been, but Ryoma Sakamoto has stayed Masuya KiyoshimigiEmon home are also paid public like.
The Iroha Maru Exhibition Hall, where you can see the footprints of Iroha Maru, which sinks off the coast of Tomo, is also near the nightlight and the Ota family residence.

Whispering Bridge Legend

Tomonoura has a lot of legends from ancient times.

It is an old tale about 200 AD.
At the invitation of Emperor Ojin, a group of visitors from Baekje and Dr. Wang Jin came to Japan and stopped at Tomonoura on their way to the capital of Kyoto.
The Yamato Imperial Court sent him to Tomo to meet Takeuchi’s Watari (Takeuchi no Omitawari). Meet.

It is said that Watari and Enoura fell in love, forgot their duties, and repeated the Aise on the bridge at night.
Because it was a small port city, it was immediately rumored that the boss was angry at the fact that it was too much, and they were arrested, tied with their hands behind their hands so that they could not hug each other, and sunk in the sea say.
He said that he could hear the “whispering voices" of Watari and Enoura every night under the bridge, and without anybody came to call this bridge the “whispering bridge."

To tell the story of this sad love, a monument is built at the place where the bridge was, but it is called the current “whispering bridge" (pictured below).

The head mound of Tadayoshi’s Sengoku warlord, Kanosuke Yamanaka, is also nearby.

Sensuijima is an island in Tomonoura, a deserted island, but there are hot spring hotels, dormitories, and campsites on the island.

The “Heisei Iroha Maru" ferry to Sensuijima is operated from “Tomonoura Fukuyama Municipal Ferry Terminal" beside the Tomonoura Daiichi Parking Lot.

The following is Tomonoura Fukuyama Municipal Ferry Terminal.

The earliest flight from Tomo to Sensuijima departs at 7:10 in the morning and the latest flight is at 21:30 at night.
It operates three times an hour during the day, and the embarkation time from Tomo to Sensuijima is about 5 minutes.
The fare is 240 yen for a round trip.
In addition, even if you are just waiting, you can not hear a voice, even if there is a sign saying that you can not get on yet, it seems that there are actually many patterns that you can board, so if the ship is berthing, “ Get on board " May I ask? "

That’s why I took a walk around Sensui Island this time.
The following is the route.

Ferry route to Sensuijima

You can also see Bentenjima (Hyakukanjima) on the ferry, so the scenery is not open.

Benten Island

Below is the area where I landed on Sensuijima.

You can see the picture below, right?
A natural “tunnel” has been created.

After passing through a narrow space like a cut-through, you will come to the beach where the national lodging and Sensuijima are.

The walk map of Sensuijima is as follows.

Sensuijima Walking Guide Map
There is a modern promenade along the coastline from the end of the sandy beach.

Looking back, there was a very beautiful sandy beach.
I want to swim.

While slowly walking down the steep cliff coastline, you can enjoy a variety of faults, such as the Bratamori.

The name Sensuijima, which the Emperor Meiji , Emperor Taisho, Emperor Showa, Emperor Imagami, and Prince Tokujin Crown Prince also visit, is a beautiful island where even hermits get drunk. There are also rocks.

Goshikiiwa of Sensuijima

In short, rocks with five different colors are concentrated around here. Is the sunlight too strong? , Honestly, did not understand.
I felt like they were parting about three.

Goshikiiwa of Sensuijima
Sensuijima landed without time, but it was really nice to visit.
Feeling became fine and fine.
There is Urashima Taro’s beach and a beach where electromagnetic waves can be grounded, but you can walk on the island because cars cannot run on the island.

It took about 65 minutes to get on a boat from Tomonoura and walk to Sensuijima to Goshikiiwa and return to Tomonoura.

Transportation to the Tomonoura

If you go by train and bus, it takes about 30 minutes by bus from JR Tomo iron bus No. 5 at Fukuyama Station.

One of the drawbacks of Tomonoura is that the roads are very narrow because of the old style.
There are not many parking lots, so sightseeing while traveling by car is very difficult.
For this reason, you will need to stop at the paid parking lot and walk on foot after getting off the car.

The time required for sightseeing is two to three hours.
If you are going to Sensuijima, it is better to watch it for at least +1 hour.

In the city of Tomonoura, the map of the Edo era can be used as it is, and it has not changed much, and there is an old Japanese landscape.

There seems to be a plan to add a neat bridge to the beautiful coastline to create a bypass road, but I just pray that the landscape will not be broken.

There are a lot of cats, and I would like to have more time to visit this time.
