Dogo Onsen Honkan

Introduction of Dogo Onsen Main Building

Dogo Onsen is a hot spring that has been around for a long time in Japan, and is said to have a history of 3000 years along with Arima Onsen.
In fact, pottery and other pottery from the middle Jomon period, about 3000 years ago from the nearby Mt. Kanzan, have been excavated, and it is a hot spring that also appears in the mythological world. Dogo Onsen has the oldest history in Japan.

In front of Dogo Onsen Station of the city train, which is the last station of the tram, there are a Botchan Karakuri clock, a footbath, and a bathtub.

A two-minute walk east from there is the Dogo Onsen Honkan, a hot spring community bath that is also designated as a national important cultural property.
It is also a model of “Yuya" (Yuya) appearing in Miyazaki Hayao’s movie “Spirited Away".

A word from the hot spring sommelier

I’m very sorry, but I’m a hot spring sommelier, so I would like to make a comment on the quality of the hot springs at Dogo Onsen.
There is no volcano near Dogo Onsen, so it is not a volcanic hot spring, but here a large amount of hot springs of about 42 ° C to 51 ° C spring out.
The quality of the hot spring is a simple hot spring, and there should be no special features in the hot water. It is a good hot water that gives a good impression.
Because it is not forcibly pumping hot water that has been heated underground, it may be true that hot water that has drifted underground for many years, possibly decades, has naturally sprung out on the road here .
Therefore, it is easy to understand that Dogo Onsen has been popular with Japanese people since ancient times for 3,000 years.
It is inevitable that chlorine will be introduced, but even a simple hot spring that is kind to everyone, the quality of the spring can not be thought of as a simple spring.
If you know, you will.

How to bathe in Dogo Onsen Main Building

The Dogo Onsen Main Building, completed in 1894 (Meiji 27), was a day-trip hot spring, as it is now, and frequented by Bungo Soseki Natsume and Shiki Masaoka .

At the Dogo Onsen Main Building, there are two types of bathrooms that can be used for bathing at the moment: Kami-no-yu and Kami-no-yu and Tamanoyu.
However, when purchasing a bathing ticket, there are four types of fee systems, so if you know on site, you will be wondering which to enter.
Therefore, select the information below that you would like to enter in advance.

(A-1) The lower part of the bath of Kami (60 minutes = 410 yen) allows you to enjoy a hot spring with the same feeling as a general public bath.
There are no towels and there is no soap, body soap or shampoo in the bathroom, so please bring your own or use a towel + soap (60 yen) and a shampoo set (vending machine).
Dressing room lockers are free key type.
There are two places for men’s hot water, west and east. The dressing rooms are common, so you can wipe your body with a towel and then move to another bathroom via the dressing room.
At the moment, there is only one women’s hot water and it is always crowded, so there are plans to add more.
The dressing room dryer is 10 yen.
Rest area on the second floor is not available.
You can freely visit “Botsuchiyanma" on the 3rd floor, but you cannot use the Rei-no-Yu.
If you visit the new shrine, you will be charged an extra 260 yen, but a staff member will explain.

(A-2) On the second floor of Kami no Yu (60 minutes = 840 yen), there is a rest area and yukata service that goes up to the second floor by stairs.
Luggage other than valuables can be left on the second floor.
Take the yukata and go to the bath on the 1st floor of Kami-no-Yu. When you change into your yukata and return to the 2nd floor, tea and rice crackers will be served.
There are no towels, soaps, body soaps, or shampoos.
If you wear a yukata, you will need to return to the dressing room on the first floor and change clothes. The time limit is 60 minutes, so you can choose not to wear a yukata from the beginning.
You can freely visit “Botsuchiyanma" on the 3rd floor, but you cannot use the spirit water.
Also, if you visit the new shrine, it costs 260 yen separately.

B-1) The second floor of the Reiyu-no-Yu (60 minutes = 1250 yen) goes up the stairs from the back stairs to the second floor.
Luggage other than valuables can be left in the rest room on the second floor.
Then, you will be provided with a yukata and towel rental, so bring your yukata and towel and go to the first floor Reinoyu.
When using a valuables locker, 100 yen will not be returned.
Rei-no-Yu dressing room lockers are also free key type, and there are also body soap and shampoo in the Rei-no-Yu bathroom. The second floor of hot water is convenient.
In addition, as for the yukata, as well as the second floor of Kami-no-Yu, you do not have to wear it.
And customers of Rei-no-Yu can also use the above-mentioned Kami-no-Yu downstairs.
In other words, you can take a bath in both spirit water and god water. Well, the fountain quality is not different …
But please confirm it because it is 60 minutes limit.
After taking a bath, return to the second floor of the Rei no Yu, where tea and rice crackers are served.
When you return, you will be guided through a tour course of “Mata Shinden," the only hot spring dedicated to the royal family in Japan.
In addition, the inside of the new shrine is for the Imperial Household, so all photography is prohibited.
In addition, the Shinden is basically taken by a guide and it takes about 10 minutes, but this does not seem to be included in 60 minutes, so please be assured.
In addition, you can freely visit “Botsuchiyanoma" on the third floor.

B-1) The private room on the third floor of the Reiyu-no-Yu (80 minutes = 1550 yen) goes up the third floor from the back stairs.
Luggage other than valuables can be left in the private room on the third floor.
Then, you will be provided with a yukata and towel rental, so bring your yukata and towel and go to the first floor Reinoyu.
The stairs are narrow and traditional steep stairs, so it is quite difficult to move.
The Rei-no-Yu dressing room lockers are free key-style, and there are also body soap and shampoo in the Rei-no-Yu bathroom.
You can also wear a yukata without wearing it.
And customers of Rei-no-Yu can also use the above-mentioned Kami-no-Yu downstairs.
After taking a bath, return to the private room on the third floor of the Reiyu-no-Yu, where you will be served tea and a botchan dumpling.
And when you return, you can freely visit “Botsuchiyanma" on the same third floor.
If you go to the back of the second floor, the tour course of “Mata Shinden" is also OK.
However, there were not many private rooms on the 3rd floor, so they were already full on weekday evenings when I visited.
Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays will be quite tough.

* Each fee and structure are as of September 2017.

No, it’s very difficult to understand for the first time.
The old couple had come to the reception before, but I was always lost at the price list, so I was told, “Please go first."
The way of entertaining tea and sweets after the bath is an old-fashioned scene, so it is recommended to use the second floor.
However, it is a steep old building with narrow stairs, so if you have a bad knee, it is difficult to climb or descend the stairs.
In the case of children, the price is almost half even in a private room.
In addition, the time limit seems to be a guide, it seems that it does not mean that you are monitoring closely, so it seems that you do not need to worry too much, but it is a rule, so I want to keep it as much as possible.
Commemorative towels (for souvenirs) can be purchased with soap at 220 yen, so of course I also got them.

Dogo Onsen Main Building

If you like Dogo Onsen Honkan original yukata, you can buy it from s size to L size for 3900 yen.

Business hours are from 6:00 in the morning, and will be closed around 21 o’clock.
The 2nd and 3rd floors are crowded and even if the floor is full, if you say “I want to wait for a vacancy" or “I want to make a reservation", please come or call me a few minutes later.
Please note that there are some days off during the general cleaning in December.

In addition, the hot water in the Dogo Onsen Main Building is completely drained, so the temperature cannot be adjusted with a bathtub.
For this reason, seven engineers from Dogo City, who manage the distribution of hot water at Dogo Onsen, take turns, measure the outside air temperature, adjust the temperature at the time of hot water distribution, and pour the water. It is said that the hot water poured into is adjusted to the appropriate temperature.
In addition, for the first hot water in the morning, it is said that the work of pouring from the middle of the night is done, so it seems that my head really falls, but thanks to such people, we can also enjoy the hot spring It is translation.

Earthquake-resistant construction of Asukanoyu spring and Dogo Onsen main building

On September 26, 2017, a new facility, Dogo Onsen Annex “Asuka Yuyu" (Asukayu) will open.
I think it is a separate fee, but there is also a special bathroom that reproduces the “Mata Shinden" dedicated to the imperial family, so there are quite a lot of ideas.
Next to Dogo Onsen “Tsubaki-no-yu".
This new facility requires an earthquake-resistant construction of the Dogo Onsen Main Building, and is closed during that time, meaning that it is an alternative hot spring facility, but it is also permanent and is called “outdoor hot spring".

The seismic retrofitting of Dogo Onsen Main Building, which has been in business for over 100 years, takes time because it is also an important cultural property of the country.
The construction period for a fully closed building is expected to take five to seven years, and a partial opening will take seven to nine years.
The total project cost is about 2 billion yen, and we are still considering how to start the construction and have not decided yet. However, the construction is expected to start in the autumn of 2018.

Well, finally, I will introduce the lucky spot.

Hot water on the stone

The Dogo Onsen Main Building also has lucky spots and power spots.

Major powers (Okuninushino Mikoto) and Norihiko Shouhiko (Sukunabiko Nanokami) entered Iyo from Izumo to build a nation.
At that time, the name of Shikohiko suffered sudden illness. There is a legend to say.

Cobble stone

If you put hot water from Dogo Onsen on this gem stone and make a wish, it is said that you will be able to communicate with God and that there are benefits to “healing sickness", “marriage" and “business prosperity".
It is located along the road beside the building (north side) of the Dogo Onsen Main Building, so anyone can visit it free of charge, and there is a long ladle and a hot spring to hang on.

Transportation to the Dogo Onsen Honkan(Honkan means Main Building)
